Power Assisted Micro-manipulation
(P.A.M.)
In 1999 a series of articles in a British Osteopathic publication featured an approach to treatment which utilised a "Biomechanical Instrument" with a "Bionic Hand" to mobilise and treat the back.
Intrigued by this we looked further into it and the more we looked the more we were impressed. So in the May 2000 Im’s partner, John Mickerson, travelled to England where he trained with, Robert Taylor, the developer of this treatment approach which he has called Power Assisted Micro-manipulation (P.A.M.) As a result our Hobart Clinic was the first Clinic anywhere in Australia to use this revolutionary approach to treatment and it proved to be so popular it was decided to buy a second unit for the Chatswood clinic.
Robert Taylor, a mechanical engineer, realised that the spine’s strength in fact comes from it’s flexibility and elasticity and problems emerge as various abuses and injuries lead to the spine becoming gradually more inflexible.
So Robert developed his P.A.M. equipment to help restore the spine’s lost flexibility and elasticity.. Osteopathy has always been aimed at doing exactly the same thing but the advantage of P.A.M. over conventional osteopathic techniques is that in chronic back problems where considerable flexibility and elasticity has been lost from the spine, the powered handpiece with it’s four "bionic fingers" can steadily work to free up the joint restrictions with much more persistence than even the fittest and strongest osteopath could achieve. At the same time this "Biomechanical Instrument" has been specifically set up to be totally safe even on very old osteoporotic spines.
Robert has trialed P.A.M. at a British orthopaedic hospital. As yet the results have not been published but we understand that when they are they will make a few people sit up and look.
Our own experience with P.A.M. is that it won't help everyone but it is extremely effective in many cases often helping those who have had little or no success with other kinds of treatment.
